City of Nashville Sues Blake Shelton

Have you been to Blake Shelton’s bar, Ole Red? It’s on Broadway in Nashville and it’s getting sued by the City of Nashville because of the exterior lights. In August 2017, the Nashville Historic Zoning Commission passed a policy against colored exterior lights within districts with historic overlays. The outer red lights are part of Shelton’s brand for his bar. The front of the building is not breaking the law, but the sides are brick which falls under the jurisdiction of the new law.

Multiple businesses are also affected by this new law. The big problem here is whether or not the zoning commission has the authority to enforce the exterior lighting of companies. The agency typically regulates the types of alterations a property owner can make to buildings in historic areas. Downtown business owners have been butting heads in the past over the enforcement of historic guidelines over the downtown area. It has seen increased tourism in recent years, and that has resulted in the destruction of multiple landmark buildings and restoring others.

The building where Ole Red is was built in 1926. The building is owned by the Ryman Hospitality who has a partnership with the “I Lived It” star. The bar gets its name because of his hit, Ole Red where the songs talks about a somebody who kills a man who is having an affair with his wife. After getting a life sentence, he earns the trust of the warden who allows him to take care of his dog Ole Red who has caught everybody who has escaped the prison but there’s a plot twist here. The dog gets a girlfriend and the man keeps the dog from her. That’s when he makes his escape! The dog goes south to his girlfriend while the escaped prisoner was heading to Tennessee.
