AJ Sanders: From Golf to Guitar

I had an opportunity to sit down with country music singer AJ Sanders. During the course of the interview, we talked about a number of things such as where he’s from, his wife, and what it was like for him when he first moved to Nashville from his hometown of Hartsville, South Carolina. He said he’s only shared this story in one other interview.

Shortly after the tornado went through Nashville, I sent him a message on Instagram and asked what there was to do on a Tuesday night. He told me to meet him at some writers rounds that were happening in Nashville. While we hung out, Sanders told me a story about the night the tornado hit. He was on the rooftop of one of the bars on Broadway and he watched the tornado roll through the area.

AJ didn’t think he would be doing music for a living. Instead, he thought he would be playing golf on the PGA tour. He did several mini tours for golf and he was on the road all the time. It was during that time that he started writing and playing music on the side. So, he went from traveling for golf to doing music fulltime.

We talked about his song titled “What I See”. He says this song is actually about his wife. “We were watching football 3 years ago and she was on the couch with sweat pants, sweatshirt, and a hair in a mess, no make-up, and I just remember looking at her – and remember saying, ‘Man you look good!’ And any girl out there goes, ‘Man, shut up!’ I picked my guitar up a little bit later that night and came up with a little bit of a rhythm and sent it to my producer.”

AJ has a new single called “Sober Over You” that’s being released on June 26th
