The Plott Hounds, A Little Bit of Alabama, a Little Bit of Chris Stapleton

In April, I had an opportunity to talk with The Plott Hounds at Smithe’s Ole Bar in Atlanta. The group consists of five members:

1.            Noah Alexander (Lead Vocals and Guitar)

2.            Jeff Powell (Lead Guitar)

3.            Kirk “Catfish” Humphrey (Lead Guitar and Vocals)

4.            Kevin Coughenour (Bass Guitar and Vocals)

5.            Scott Tate “Tater” (Drums)

These guys aren’t your typical Nashville-based musicians, either. They all have one thing in common: Minnesota. Some of the group once lived in Georgia, North Carolina, and Iowa.

The Plott Hounds have fans internationally and they have even charted on the radio in Poland, too. They have toured all over the UK. While the band did play in London, Liverpool, and Manchester, they mostly played in small blue-collar towns because that is where the Minnesota group can connect best with the audience.

They all started listening to music from their families and decided they wanted to pursue a music career full time.  Noah listened to a variety of music on vinyl with his family.  Tater had a friend who played the drums and he fell in love with them and started playing, too.

The group’s biggest challenge is the logistics of getting where they need to go. Sometimes they don’t sell enough t-shirts or other merch to get to the next show and have been left short on cash.  They have said that this is a low-margin business, and none of them thought they were going to get rich from it. They continued that the highs are the greatest feeling in the entire world and the failures are brutal.

You can see them on October 4th in Stillwater, Minnesota for Float for a Cure at 6:30 pm. This concert includes seven different groups besides the Plott Hounds and this event is raising awareness for Cystic Fibrosis.  Tickets for this event are $35 for children, 4-12, and $50 for adults online. You can purchase them at the door for $60. Children will remain the same price, regardless.
